Do I need a .uy domain or is .com enough?

Short answer

If you only sell in Uruguay, a .com.uy or .uy tells customers, and Google, that you're local. If you plan to sell abroad, a .com is more neutral. What matters most isn't the ending but a name that's short, easy to say and the same one you use on social.

Each ending

.com.uy: the most common for Uruguayan companies and the one local customers recognise most.
.uy: shorter, and increasingly common for new brands.
.com: international; useful if you have clients outside Uruguay or plan to expand.

Choosing the name

Short and easy to spell over the phone, no hyphens or numbers.
The same as, or close to, your social handle.
If you can, register the other endings too so nobody else takes them.

Whose name it's in

The domain should be registered to your business, not to whoever built the site. It's your business's address online: lose it and you lose the site and your email.
