How do you take payments online in Uruguay?
Short answer
In Uruguay you can take payments online with Mercado Pago, a payment gateway that accepts local cards, bank transfer, or cash payment networks like Abitab and Redpagos. Ideally offer at least two: one with a card and one without.
The most common options
- Mercado Pago: the best known. It takes cards and account balance, and plugs easily into a store or a payment link.
- Payment gateways: services that process credit and debit cards inside your own site, with your brand's checkout.
- Bank transfer: no per-sale fee, but every payment has to be checked by hand. Many businesses reward it with a discount.
- Cash networks: Abitab and Redpagos let customers pay in cash with a code, handy for people who don't use cards.
How to choose
Look at three things: the fee per sale, how many days until the money reaches you, and how comfortable it is for your customer. A cheap option your customers don't use ends up costing you sales.
If you sell physical products, link payments to the store so stock updates and orders confirm without you stepping in.
What we do
In the stores we build, we set up the payment methods your customers use, with automatic order confirmation and, if you want, a bank-transfer discount.
